I'm a window washer outside your fandom.

Why I haven't been writing. )

Well, I've written these. But let me tell you why they don't count. )

Other than Dragonlord, my fics have been "surface stories."

There are stories that you pull out of your gut, that are saying something even if you're not sure what, and then there are stories where you're just diddling on the surface. Moving the furniture around.

If that were okay with me, that would be one thing. )

So I'm the window washer outside your fandoms, looking in, while I'm working, working, working.

Part of it is the company I keep. And the fact that the sky is falling. )

I find that without writing and creative work ... I starve. I left this temple, which I always loved, fifteen years ago because I starved here.

So I took today off. Cancelled chauffeuring Ani Samla. Rescheduled practice to Saturday night. And I'm taking time to write.

* i.e. became a closed canon.

Winter of Banked Fires by Yahtzee, adult, Erik/Charles

Spent an enjoyable two days reading this fic at odd moments. The story is rich, detailed, takes unexpected turns even as it gives you (and the characters) everything you (and they) want. Wish fulfillment doesn't feel like wish fulfillment when you have to work very hard to get there.

Anybody seen Michael Fassbender in Shame? Been watching X-Men: First Class on repeat this weekend and ... I want to see more of him.

In other news: I'm collecting cashmere sweaters (they're warm, but light, soft and not scratchy, snugglesome inside and out). My cashmere is collecting cat hair (can only add to the fluffiness).

This year I did ... things. Retreat and stuff. Some original fic. And got involved in a time-consuming relationship.

I didn't think I wrote any fic. But hey, yeah, I did.

This won't take much of your time. )

Yup. That's it.

I'm grumpy, tired, disgruntled, and other gru- adjectives. Have some happy fanfic.

I started by reading one of my own, and then went looking for more:

Silent Night, SGA, John/Rodney, peaceful.

"Christmas?" John said.

What Not To Expect When You're Not Expecting It by [personal profile] thehoyden, X-Men First Class, Charles/Erik, hilarious and light-hearted fun. This is what MPREG is meant to be.

“I wasn’t hiding it from you. Honestly, I didn’t know for certain until yesterday, which I think we can agree was bad timing and not the sort of thing one springs before the heat of battle,” Charles says earnestly.

The Whole World Wants What We're On bywaketosleep, X-Men First Class, Charles/Erik, the rest of that road trip, this time with sex and a Charles (and Erik) who's note-perfect.

"There's only one bed," he called after Erik, who'd dropped his suitcase and vanished into the bathroom.

"They were full except for this room," Erik returned over the noise of the sink. "It's large enough to share." He opened the door. "Or would you prefer to sleep on the floor?"

Charles actually looked between the floor and the bed to be sure of his choice. "Sharing is fine," he conceded.

Any more like these? SGA or X-Men: First Class.

For the record, I like both Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr (I had to look up the spelling of that).

I came out of the movie respecting both men. Erik is right about the likely reaction of humans toward mutants: no, they would not respond well. He's true to himself and his kind. Charles is right about ethics, keeping their personal standards high: no one should let the reaction of others determine who they're going to be.

Charles' "Everything...." is my favorite line of the movie. The actor says so much in that one passionate word: acceptance of Erik, admiration, compassion, humor, delight, arrogance, sensual pleasure in his own abilities (he's practically high), and something strange. A kind of absorption in the other person, like he loses himself in living through the experiences of others.

I don't think that Charles should understand everything about everyone. He may know everything, but there's a difference between the intellect and the emotions. A telepath isn't the same thing as an empath.

Reading someone's mind ... well, someone might think, "I am tired." But the emotional content is the important part. Is the tired person whiny? Rebellious? Irritated? Accepting?

I like how his powers make him know a great deal, but not everything. Especially not while he's young. Mind reading must be a skill that grows more sophisticated with experience, learning to pick up the subtle clues that give away the emotional content, the way we learn to read body language.

So I find myself startled, taken aback at little swipes at Charles that seem to be based on the assumption that he should know everything, being a telepath.

I find myself reading and going -- yes, he's not perfect. That's great! Who wants a Gary Stu?

What I've fallen for in Charles (yes, I have a crush on both men; yes, I know they're fictional) is the fact that he's chosen to use his ability to understand others. He has this hunger and curiosity to know, and know deeply.

At least I think it's a choice. It might inherent to the extent of his gift. He might tap into a deeper strata than other telepaths who use telepathy to attack. I know when I learned something about an enemy of mine in grade school, I couldn't hate him anymore. Maybe that's what happens with Charles. He knows too much to hate anyone.

Writing is writing, right? So if I'm not working on the projects I should be doing right now, at least I'm writing? This is my rationalization at any rate.

I'm sure you all know by now that X-Men First Class is irresistible. Erik is irresistible. So is Charles.

I love the meta that's pouring out in this fandom already (see [personal profile] seperis' post if you haven't already, though be aware it is one spoiler from beginning to end). There's another great post from an SGA friend who's also in the comic fandom and knows the original canon, but damn it, I can't find it. ETA: Oh, here it is, not quite meta, more review-plus-meta.

Fandom: X-Men First Class
Title: Playing The Hopeful Move
Author: Me, of course
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None
Thank yous: to [personal profile] mad_maudlin and to [personal profile] tzzzz for, respectively, making me post it, and telling me to make it a story. All mistakes are my own. By way of explanation, in chess, the hopeful move is the one that makes you vulnerable but can completely disarm your opponent.

Summary: Charles and Erik go on a road trip to find mutants and end up playing chess at 20,000 feet. "I'm not omnipotent enough to lie."
