Stargate Fan Awards: Crossovers (links to all the stories here)

Jack's Immortal - great Methos and Joe, and I don't even know this canon, but as soon as I hit the Jack/Sam? Backbuttonbackbuttonbackbutton. I just think that Jack is interested in more than how Sam looks in a tight skirt. They've known each other long enough for more than that.

Where Have All The Physics Gone? - Amireal's SGA/Star Trek crossover is a stitch, loosely written but funny. I mean, you will snicker all the way through.

Entity - Danvers' "Ghostbusters" take on the SGA episode "Entity" is clever. Unfortunately, I've seen the movie way too many times and recognized all the one-liners. When you can lip-synch the fic....

Catalyst - I couldn't get into it. Between the unfamiliar Due South canon and the capitalization of Church I decided not to try.

Here Is No Water - This is a great story. It would fly even if you knew nothing about either Cameron Mitchell or John Sheppard. Intense and hot, but the combination of emotions, the military, and two completely different and opposing types of military men -- wow. Since I'm not going to vote for my own story, this is the winner. The other stories would have to work really hard to beat this.

Fathers and Sons - Don't know the canon. Backbutton.

Daemonology - Canon too weird. I've never been able to get into this one, and I love [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone's work.

Teatime With The Gods - The huge banner is as annoying as hell, so I was in a bad mood by the time the story finally opened. The dialogue with no dialogue tags opening didn't hook me. "For the High Ones' Sake" annoyed me, too. Backbutton.

Tatters - Martha's a great writer, but this sequel doesn't seem to stand on its own. And also, I know nothing about the canon. *pokes at it* Nevermind. Backbutton.

Perfect - The opening line did nothing for me, and as I'd just read Here Is No Water, there was no contest.

Colony Atlantis - I can't comment because it's my own story. :D

My three favorites are Here Is No Water, Colony Atlantis, and Where Have All The Physics Gone.

I can't ethically vote for my own Colony Atlantis. Where Have All The Physics Gone? is fun, but clearly written on a lark.

Here Is No Water is a memorable, powerful read, giving you insight into both Sheppard and Cameron, as well as two types of military men: the dark horse and the golden boy, with their respective flaws. Sheppard shoots himself in the foot; the destruction of his career is largely his own fault. But Cameron's political maneuvering, carefully doing the "right thing" also isn't particularly admirable. Add to that the steamy, angry, unfriendly and incredibly hot sex, and you have my vote.

Stargate Fan Awards: Vignette (links to all the stories here)

Naturally, I started with the highest, hottest NC-17 rating.

Skin - I'm not sure about this one. One moment I hate the first person voice. The next moment I love the hotness. The next moment I hate the rhyme on "Jack's back." I move on to the next ficlet....

Desecration - I hit the word "screaming" and hit the backbutton. Not my scene, man.

Didn't Tell - The writing's good, and this would work except for the minor detail that people don't get court martialed for being gay in the military. They just get booted out. I send this writer back to do some homework.

Disillusion - In a vignette you have very little time to catch the readers' attention. I liked Cameron's disappointment, but the description of the kiss (does anyone expect choirs of angels?) and the word "saliva" lost me. Onward.

Four Seasons - This was just too emo for me. Few people do first-person voice well, very, very few.

Just Another Quiet Night at Home - Ah, the rare Daniel perspective written very well, beginning with his awareness of security cameras and smoothing away his own excitement. I'm sold. I've set this one up on the shelf for consideration as a winner. Bonus points for the clever title.

On A Stakeout And Afterwards - This is not Komos' best. I'm not a big fan of UST and combining that with the deliberately annoying Penske and I just don't enjoy reading it. It still goes on the shelf in the number two slot.

Private Dancer - I remember the song, so my first thought is "uh-oh" when I read the title. I really hate the photomanip on the first page, yikes. The first person voice (again) -- no. The only person who wrote a dancing Daniel that got me was Alyse's Drums. Backbutton.

Raindrops - I rather like this one. It has an incompleteness that leaves one hovering on the edge. It's not the winner but it's worth a read.

Sack Lunch - The title already had me. And yes, it's quite sweet with a nice bit of memory thrown in.

Santas' Little Helpers - I was enjoying the humor (nice change of pace from the wistful fics) and the set-up (Jack and Daniel daring each other under the mistletoe) until I came to this line: "They both gasped as a searing hot bolt of electricity went from their lips to their groins." Ow.

Snuggle - Ack! Not another horrible photomanip. Can we make these illegal? I'm sure the photomanip effected my vote, but the description of their position was too fumbled and the emotion too sappy.

Twilight Blue - Ooo! A new one takes the lead. "Jack knew how to step so that he made no sound. Daniel could never be so silent. They both knew it. It occurred to Daniel that if he stayed behind Jack might have a better chance. It never occurred to Jack." Brilliant. A vignette that's action/adventure. Rare and excellent. This takes the lead.

Welcome Home, Mr. General, Sir - Can't comment, as this is my own. ;)

Wild - I like it, as I like all of Destina's work. But I think I have the winner.

My favorites are Twilight Blue, Wild, Welcome Home, Mr. General, Sir (of course), Sack Lunch, and Just Another Quiet Night at Home.

I can't ethically vote for my own fic, so Welcome Home, Mr. General, Sir is out. As for the others, I've learned that vignettes start to have the same wistful quality after a while.

Which means Twilight Blue has it, for being that rare vignette that combines off-world danger with a gentle Jack/Daniel moment. Originality should be rewarded, and this is highly original.

I have to say I'm surprised at the quality of the entrants.

Strange Attractors - Sometimes you believe the characterization more than the plot. It's a good story, interesting take on the sci-fi trope, taking it seriously, but not winner material in this category.

Cold Around The Edges - Fascinating. Brings two men in a room alive. I love Radek here: "You have a skill for taking a deeply personal moment and stripping it like hydrochloric acid." You're yanked from one worst-case scenario to another with no clear idea which will be the end. And, wow, the end is truly powerful. I have a feeling it's up against tough competition in this next story though.

Legion the Things I Would Give to Oblivion - I've avoided this one which is dark even for Auburn. But here goes. *dives*

I've heard this is a great story, and I am a big fan of Auburn (big-big) but there are too many SG-1 canon violations so far. The Ancient database should destroy John's mind. The chair doesn't download the Ancient database anyway, and there was a ZPM in Antarctica when O'Neill used the chair so there are no variables to account for this. The Wraith don't destroy planets from orbit, there's no reason to -- they destroy cities, not planets. A powerful story, but not, surprisingly, the winner.

No Choice - Because the mind scrabbles against the dark, the most important aspect of a darkfic is its believability. You have to buy the set-up irrevocably. I have a hard time believing John, with a weapon in hand, would make this choice instead of shooting the enemy. The description of his feelings, however, are potent.

A Knife's Blade - It's fun to find a story about the Goa'uld in the Pegasus Galaxy. I have to admit, I like them better than the Wraith any day of the week. Plus, there is a sensuality to both Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett that makes the mere idea of John and Rodney surrounded by cheesy Goa'uld opulence almost obscene. I will come back to enjoy this story later, because the writer doesn't quite meet the high standard of the competition.

I expected to vote for Legion the Things I Would Give to Oblivion, it will probably still win, but...

Cold Around The Edges is the greater story-telling feat. It is hard to make two men in a room both terrifying, exhilarating, and exciting. Hard to give intellectual labor that fast-paced edge of panic that you'd find in an action story. Hard to alternately challenge the mind and then provide brief breaks of nostalgia. Hard to give us that much hope in this ending, where it slots neatly back into canon. Really, [livejournal.com profile] out_there, bravo. Well done.

Weighing PWPs is like judging a wet t-shirt contest. What's not to love? "Hmm. That's a nice set, but hers are definitely perkier." *Icarus tosses and catches popcorn.*

Dangerous - Daniel/Camulus? I'll get back to you on this one. I have never found Camulus hot. *head-scratch*

Endurance - Sleepy early morning Jack and Daniel. Mmmm... I remember this one. Jack and Daniel challenging each other, I love it when they have a bet they will surely fail. Mild, pleasing humor. I love plots with my PWPs though I've sworn to put sheer hotness first for this competition.

Fatboy Slim and the Softail Custom - Odd title. First person, and once again, no. First person is all about getting the voice of the character right. If you can't tell who the "I" is from the first sentence, then no. Backbutton.

From Daniel, With Love - First person again. But also, I will never be able to read the word "precious" without thinking of Gollum, especially if it reoccurs several times in two paragraphs. Backbutton.

Getting Off - Oh, I know this one, so glad it got nominated. Guh. It's as hot as ever, coarse and utterly masculine. My heart rate is still fast and pounding. Everything very clearly visualized.

Hooked - The lack of dialogue tags marks this as no quite being on the same level as the others. The leap back in time disrupts the sexy/humor of two men struggling with Daniel's tight jeans. I go in search of hotter fics.

Intensity - Ooo. Collar. Oh, hmm. The voice of this detracts from the hotness. There's too much distance, like a video camera left on in the room.

Just Say It - I love this The Grrrl, but the first person doesn't work for me. First person is just not hot.

Leonine - Huh? Teal'c/Cameron? I read on. Okay, Teal'c laughing is incredibly sexy. "how the hell do you get anything done with these friggin’ robes on anyway, it’s like trying to make out with a set of curtains" -- great line. The phrase seismic has got me. Wow. I'm impressed. I've just been sold and turned on by a pairing I don't like.

Raindance - Nope. I don't find schmoop hot. Also, in my experience with men in their forties, the running up and down hills? Not so much if they can avoid it.

Ships at Sea - The tangled emotions are compelling, but I don't buy the "whoops I slipped and fell on his cock" as a first time set up. Darn. It was getting interesting.

Shy Guy - I think I've heard of this story. Why yes, I wrote it. Okay, I say no more.

Slipping - This melted me. First, it captured with the careful work of sex, of being the person consciously bringing Daniel off. Then, their creativity. Then, finally, the insight into what really brings him off and that exposed emotional vulnerability. Hoo. I'm off to the showers for a moment.

The Stargate In Daniel's Refrigerator - I have decided that experimental is cool, but not hot.

Understood - This link is broken. Whoops.

Why not giving Archaeologists Coffee...can be a good thing - Funny, and fun, but lost me on the exclamation points.

Oh, you're all so lovely, and I feel boneless. Do I have to choose?

My favorites are Shy Guy (naturally), Slipping, Leonine, Getting Off, and Endurance. I can't ethically vote for my own Shy Guy, so that's out.

The three hottest are Slipping, Leonine, and Getting Off. But Slipping and Leonine taught me something new. Oh, this is a tough one. Slipping had very realistic and detailed sex, with a bonus insight into Jack/Daniel. Leonine made Teal'c/Cameron hot. Not only hot, but joyous, which is an insight in and of itself. *whines* This is hard!

I have to say...

Slipping. Because although Leonine did the impossible and made Teal'c/Cameron not just hot, but beautiful, it's sheer hotness that matters most. But I reserve the right to change this vote because it's soooo close.

I take it back: Leonine. I just can't not reward such a rare achievement.

Meme ganked from [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna: If you happen to be working on some creative writing project, fanfiction or NaNoWriMo or what have you, post exactly one sentence (or more) from each of your current work(s) in progress. It should probably be your favourite or most intriguing sentence so far, but what you choose is entirely your discretion. Mention the title (and genre) if you like, but don't mention anything else -- this is merely to whet the general appetite for your forthcoming work(s).

For Out Of Bounds:

The phone in the Olympic village room didn't often ring, so Rodney's coach already had a slack-jawed look of surprise before he answered it. The name on the other end left him puzzled. )

For the as yet unnamed John-Screws-Up fic:

The atmosphere on Atlantis was jovial and alive with rumor, soft laughter in the halls and impromptu coffee break conferences over Ancient equipment. )

Continuation of Last Port Of Call:

Unfortunately, Rodney had never really perfected the, you know, up and down look, where you glanced over a woman and pretended to be gazing off into the distance. )
