"Hi! Welcome to the tutoring center! Guess what? We're having an office party today! Potluck, bring food.

What do you mean it's the week before finals and you're not in the mood?

What do you mean you loathe parties, office parties most of all?

C'mon, Icarus. Wipe that Snape-ish snarl off your face, stop swearing, bake something, and come 'be entertaining' for an hour or two!

What do you mean you'd rather clean the catbox with your teeth?"

LOLOLOL! I knew I wasn't alone! *sneaks a bowl of chocolates under the desk and hands one to you*

Don't tell them I'm here. I have, um, terribly important things to do. Yes, I'm busy and important, everyone go away.

Ugh. My last Holiday party...the-party-that-must-not-be-spoken-of. No good ever comes of those things. ;-D

Why do we do this? Is there anyone who enjoys these things? Is it something started by A Christmas Carol, whereas all bosses feel like Scrooges if they don't inflict a holiday party on us? Screw the party -- give us a paid day off so we can get some of our shopping done. Decorate the place in blinking, happy lights and put out chocolates for a month. Now that is Christmas spirit.

I can never understand 'enforced intimacy' but every company does it and you end bored, upset or angry by the time you're allowed to escape. And you can't even allow yourself to get really, really drunk or else who knows what would come out of your mouth (been there, done that). :-D

Get a cold? A sudden nasty, coughy sore-throat cold. Or a stomach bug, they come fast and no one wants someone who pukes before the first drink

Then you can snuggle in bed with a good book and chicken soup ^^

I've bailed on every office party, ever, so I'm pretty good at excuses. Since I'm tutoring and they know I'm a student, I sounded really frantic and busy and explained that none of my classes have finals so we're wrapping things up this week and everything's due.

It's more or less true, and this is a damned stupid week to have this party.

Ugh, I loathe office parties. Why on EARTH would anyone want to socialise with the people you work with? I can't associate work with party! :)

The last one I went to, I drank too much and couldn't get a lift home. And the boss drank too much and was sleazy to the waitress all night. Horrible.

I have to admit, no matter how many times I tell myself I'm going to go, no matter how many times I've promised I'll go...

... I have, in 17 years of employment, never been to an office party. I always, always bail at the last minute.

I really mean to go. But I make a break for freedom every time.

On another subject... whimper, whine... I don't suppose you have any Jack/Daniel recs? *puppy dog eyes* I've just burned through all over Kalimyre's fics (didn't buy the 'bully' ones, she shows her age there, but her Jack and Daniel are so intelligent), I've read Anna S., Thegrrrl, Brighid... please?

Hee. I rec'd Loki's Curse to you.

The Huntress? Gigglefest? I bet I'll love 'em.

Mallory? Cerebral? Sounds great!

I'm not big on the angst, but a title like Conduct Unbecoming has to be tried.

Thank you. *collapses at your feet in gratitude*

More on The Huntress... I've just realised she's written WAY more than I thought, so start from the bottom (I've been going through Area 52 by oldest J/D fics posted first) - The Survey Says is screamingly funny, as is The Gambler, and A Walk on the Wild Side had some great moments.

That might make things easier. :D

I think that's wise, honestly. Office parties never do anything but suck. :-)

As for fic... hmmm. Okay, I liked Conduct Unbecoming (http://www.area52hkh.net/ash/hellblazer/conduct01.php) by Hellblazer, but you may not - it's really, really heavy on the angstarama (it's a guilty pleasure type fic, anyway :D).

Also - you have read Loki's Curse (http://www.area52hkh.net/asj/jonah/curse.php) by Jonah in the Whale, haven't you? Someone recced it to me and I can't remember who.

[livejournal.com profile] juxiantang's written a Jack/Skaara - it's on my list, I haven't read it yet, but it might be interesting... A Little Place For Two (http://www.area52hkh.net/asj/juxian/place.php).

Meredith Bronwen Mallory is my personal hero - her list of fics is here (http://www.area52hkh.net/author.php?name=Meredith+Bronwen+Mallory), and they're all good, if very cerebral. I like that style of fic very much, but I know that not everyone does.

The Huntress (http://www.area52hkh.net/author.php?name=The+Huntress)' humour fics make me very, very happy, but it's hard to rec humour - other people might find her fics silly, but I got a really good giggle. I haven't been brave enough to try her Jack/Daniel/Teal'c/Jonas fic yet (argh!), but her funny stuff is well worthwhile.

I'll get back to you if I find anything else. For the most part, what I've been reading is astoundingly average.

Dude, I hear you. I hate parties with fierce passion. They're more stressful and boring than they are anything else.

I wouldn't call myself unfriendly, either. It's just that I believe Christmas should be fun, and only your family may torment you.

Mmm. You know, that's exactly the kind of interaction that made me decide that I preferred cleaning the toilets of absolute strangers, years ago.

Cleaning toilets (and poking around in someone's strange personal life, yes!) sounds pretty good to me right about now. Though I did what I always do on these things.

I stressed. I whined.

I baked the damned cheesecake.

I got dressed.

Then I bailed at the last minute, dredging out a plausible (if not generally believed) excuse.

I will feel guilty (as per usual) my next workday, but will compensate by bringing in the cheesecake. What's really funny is that everyone will say, "You missed a great party!" And what they really mean is "Fuck you, if we had to go, you did, too."

The cheesecake will only barely make up for it.

Why do workplaces do this? I don't want to talk to most of my co-workers while I'm in the office, let alone when I'm not getting paid for it. And I don't cook, for which everyone should be grateful.

The only office party I ever had fun at was the one where I took a female friend (which was not uncommon there, for some reason) and everyone assumed she was my girlfriend. Neither of us disabused them of the notion, and watching everyone struggle to say something innocuous was amusing. But that's it.

In Japanese, no less! Party on, dude.

Now WG's mother is wistfully asking if we can come down this year.

Augh. The guilt is killing me, because the answer is no, and it's not my fault but WG's. Yet she had a cancer scare only months ago so it's just... gah.

*sings* "Happy Holidays.... happy holidays... where the merry bells keep ringing, may your every wish comes truuuuuuue...."

On the other hand, I get 17 (unpaid) days off for Christmas. Yeah! All I have to do is live that long.
