A list of WiPs I am following, mostly here because I keep forgetting to check for updates. This is not part of the Democratic Fic Recs (because, as this is my personal list, it's not Democratic, is it? And these are exclusively WiPs.):

Lest I Wither
Unbecoming
Season of Healing
The Tea Series
Draco Veritas
Underwater Light
Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover
Circles of Power
If Thine Enemy
The Making of Samwise
Crystalis
Two Worlds and In Between
The Long Road to Damascus
Moving Pictures
A Lacking of Foresight
Mirror of Maybe
Procul His
Sorcerer's Apprentice
Tawdry Romance Story
Practical Magics
Snape Manor

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I will update them as more occur to me. And locate links. Too tired now. Zzzzzzz.

There's been some speculation that "Lest I Wither" (the version on ff.net, anyway) is actually finished. I'm not convinced; if that's the ending, I think it's way too abrupt.

No. It's not finished. Jim's a better writer than that, and the story has too many loose ends. I think Jim's just busy. What's more likely is that it may be an abandoned story.

I'm following a lot of those myself and I have to confess that I doubt a couple of them will EVER be finished. *weeps*

I tell myself I won't follow a WIP but then I get sucked in and DOOMED am I.

I hope you're right that it's not finished; it's one that I'd really like to see completed. I got a glimpse of JiM at Escapade and am kicking myself for not asking her about it.

I really love Lest I Wither and Mirror of Maybe.

And I'm not one to plug but..

... The Art of Necromancy is well worth a read

(isn't only saying that as she betas it, honest)

;-P

Well, I didn't speak to her, but she definitely looked female. James Walkswithwind is a woman, too. I suspect there are probably other female writers who use male-sounding pseudonyms.

A Lacking of Foresight
[livejournal.com profile] keelywolfe; I think it's only at her site.

Procul His
Alchemia Dent and Bugland; it's the sequel to A Bittersweet Potion. It's here; I don't know where else.

The Making of Samwise
[livejournal.com profile] cara_chapel; it's on her site, and it's LotR (Sam/Frodo). Like that isn't obvious from the title.

I'm looking forward to the answers to the rest of these....

It is interesting to see what kinds of names people choose. Someone should do a study on why female writers choose female-sounding, ambiguous, or male-sounding names; it's the deliberately male names I wonder about. At this point I assume slash writers are female until told otherwise.

Seeker apparently outed herself at an Escapade panel I was moderating, and I wasn't paying attention and missed the whole thing. Typical. [g]

Like... Icarus? ;)

Actually, one of the reasons I picked 'Icarus' was to remind myself not to get cocky. The image of being so full of myself that I fly too close to the sun is very good for me, personally (Buddhist that I am), and I'm reminded of it every time I sign my name.

There's one for the feminist studies.

I was blown away Seeker was a woman. That was one writer I was sure was a guy.

No kidding. *sigh*

I promised I would never, ever do a WiP. Now I have Reunion, A Deserving Man and Snape Manor. (I say, rather defensively, that Beg Me For It is not a WiP as I've had it all in my notes from the get-go, and simply added SNAFU at [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo's suggestion. As much as I hate tough betas, I really do much better with them.)

I've taken quite a few stories off my list. Blackletter says she's probably never going to finish her promising Snapefic, for one thing.

Omigod. I've been waiting....

I read it back in June, and Mad Martha must have updated it only a week or so afterwards. I've been looking at the update date, tapping my foot, never noticing the number of chapters.

Thank you!

Unbecoming (http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Cinnamon/Unbecoming/). Cinnamon. Really, the best Ron/Draco slash I've found. She's very, very good at 'show, don't tell.' The NC-17 version in her LJ is the one to read though. She's one of those writers that's good at writing very messy, awkward, real and quite passionate sex.

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover (www.fanfiction.net/~madmaudlin) Mad Maudlin. She's a dynamic and genuinely funny author, slightly kinky. But I really, really like cross-dressing. ;)

Circles of Power (www.fanfiction.net/~madmartha) Mad Martha. Another genuinely funny writer with a gift for dialogue - her quips belong in signatures, really. Then there's her characterisation, and interesting, believably complicated plots.

If Thine Enemy (www.fanfiction.net/~switchknife) [livejournal.com profile] switchknife. Complex, dark and politically sublime. I'm not a fan of AUs, but Switchknife's writing is poetry, and the subtle political fencing mesmerizing.

The Making of Samwise (http://caralil.slashdom.com/paddock.html) Bill the Pony. Gentle, visual and sensual, this story is a feast. Bill the Pony captures Tolkien's lyrical style and makes it her own, and her rural settings are carefully considered and well-researched. You'll believe this story. Like Tolkien, it seems real.

Crystalis (http://nimori.slashcity.net/) Nimori. This is pure PWP, with barely any excuse for it. Plot? Who cares? Her sex is characterisation, and very fun. You'll have to get a password for this story.

Two Worlds and In Between (www.witchfics.org) [livejournal.com profile] mctabby aka, Minerva McTabby. This is sheer brilliance, more complicated politics, and the most unlikeable, arrogant bastard of a main character you'll ever devour. It is the most original Harry Potter fanfic I've read, yet she never veers from the importance of Magic in the wizarding world, so it feels more like Harry Potter than 99% of the stories out there.

The Long Road to Damascus (http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Morrighan/) Morrighan. Excellent portrayal of Snape, first class writing, dark and brooding. This story has atmosphere, fully fleshed out OCs. It's also very unlikely to ever be finished.

Moving Pictures (www.witchfics.org) Anna aka [livejournal.com profile] coldcoffeeyes. A wonderfully characterised Harry/Ron. Anna's writing style is flippant and funny.

A Lacking of Foresight (http://www.ravenswing.com/~keelywolfe/) by Keelywolfe. I read Lord of the Rings fanfiction exclusively until I was frustrated by Keelywolfe abandoning the genre for other fandoms for a while. Finally, I started reading her 'The Art of Fucking' and 'A Lacking of Foresight.' Her writing style is vivid and passionate, and I enjoy pretty everything she's written, though my personal favourite is the wistful 'Sweet Purity of Apples' (LotR). Re: this story she's been rightly accused of over-glamourizing Ron and under-glamourizing Harry, and only gets away with her characterisations because she sets her story years in the future -- but she develops this story slowly, and her sex scenes are hot, hot, hot.

Procul His (http://www.intertexius.com/) Bugland and Alchemia Dent. I call it a cute cat story just to annoy those two. Since they've posted their positive reviews on their site (*Icarus raises eyebrows*) you can read those.

<a href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/isolde9/26493.html#cutid1>Tawdry Romance Story</a>. Isolde <lj site="livejournal.com" user="isolde9">. Complex blend of 18th century sensibilities and modern morality, her characterisations of Draco and Snape are dead-on.

<a href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/isolde9/27583.html">Practical Magic</a>. Isolde <lj site="livejournal.com" user="isolde9">. Snape/Hagrid? Yes, and Isolde actually convinces me that it's real. Gently funny, wincingly embarrassing and rather dignified story.

<a href="http://home.earthlink.net/~dinkbird">Snape Manor</a>... well, that's me, actually. I was wondering if people would catch it. That's my little comment on how frustrating this story has been. *chuckles*

Heh. Sorry about that. All hysteria aside, a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

[livejournal.com profile] dien is just going through a bad patch with it right now. She feels responsible for it, and feels it certainly needs to be completed because people like it so much. But it's clammed up and refuses to talk to her (mostly because of the shifts in characterisation from OotP I suspect - her last chapter tried to take into account a more aggressive post-OotP Harry). But also some rabid fans have tried to threaten her into continuing it, spoiled some of the fun of it for her and pissed her off, too. She'll finish it, but in her own time.
