Instrumental music hunt.
Jan. 25th, 2009 05:58 pmWorking on the music for John's competitors for the long program.
I have John's music for the short and long program (of course). I (probably) have all the necessary competitor's short program music. I have all but one of the needed music for the long program.
I've got most of the music, but I'm looking for a "bouncy" piece (can't have any lyrics) that's 4:30 minutes or longer. I need something with "pep." Could be classical, jazz, flamenco, or rock instrumental.
(I had to delete some practice music because it came out after 1999.)
Any ideas? Thoughts? Those who follow figure skating, anything I could steal from this year's competitions?

Date: 2009-01-26 02:09 am (UTC)Gershwin. *snaps fingers* Good idea. Rhapsody In Blue is being skated by Lysacek this year, but there are other Gershwin pieces and that's the "bounce" I'm looking for. Something to off-sett the melodramatic strings and operatic movie themes.

Good seed of an idea, thank you.

Date: 2009-01-26 02:33 am (UTC)ETA: I also think these would also work:
-Mozart's Overture to Marriage of Figaro
- Robert W. Smith's Ireland of Legend and Lore
- Wynton Marsalis' Variation on a Neapolitan Song

Date: 2009-01-26 02:47 am (UTC)I just need to find a different version, different conductor, and I'll bet it'll be 15 seconds longer. I disqualified it because the version I've got is 4:15 minutes. But it's perfect. Bounce, bounce, bounce.
I'll check out the others as well. Marsalis in particular. He's brilliant.

Date: 2009-01-26 02:43 am (UTC)- Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto
- the finale from Dragonheart (lots of strings and brass and glory)
- a beautiful piano pieces from The English Patient, Read Me To Sleep
- and a Rachmaninov piece in a largely minor key, variations on a theme
- and John's music
As you can see, I have too much piano music and need to balance it out.
One skater, Kyle Fletcher, tends to skate to unusual music. So far (I've changed these around a lot) he's doing the opening from Men In Black for his short program at this point, so I'm thinking something that's bouncy that contrasts with it and all of the above.

Date: 2009-01-26 04:10 am (UTC)Built in story line, and gets very "peppy" when the escape sequence starts, about 30s in. The full is ~5 min, but you can get the feel here:

Date: 2009-01-26 04:40 am (UTC)It's used in a short program in the above link, but the actual music is about the right length for a long if I remember right... I always thought it was one of the more interesting choices for music :P It's called 'Bonzo's Montreux' by Led Zepplin
Also, for my own program, I once used some afro-celt music from a movie soundtrack. It was similar to this: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=FX_Zi9W_Zcw
Looking forward to reading more!

Date: 2009-01-26 06:26 am (UTC)At least 3 songs on every album are instrumentals...
*finding one that meets the length requirement*
Shamrock Tunes, clocks in a 4:41, off On and On
Robert W. Smith's "Into the Storm". It's almost 5:50 in my version, but I played it in high school and I can tell you that there are TONS of repeats in there. There are slow parts and fast bits, but it's worth a try.
*shares RWS love*
not that I'm, like, addicted to his timpani solos after 7 years of band, or anything...

for sweet music, and very american -reminds me a little of copeland- there is thomas newman. i have always loved his piece, 'how to make an american quilt', very moving. here it is on youtube

also, i like the piece from the 2nd matrix movie (or is it the 3rd), where they are all dancing in the center of the earth. definitely has quite a beat, makes you want to get up and move. also from youtube. i think its called fluke or thats the artist. this version is 4.29, but the movie album version was much longer
