Knuckling down today.

So I wrote some original (if highly derivative) fiction for my creative writing class. I thought it was a short story. He said it was the beginning of a novel, and he wants more. So I've promised him chapter two... mentally adding it to the list:

1 - Snape Manor
2 - Beg Me For It, part Four (SNAFU)
3 - A Deserving Man (though I didn't hear back from Dad about the second part. Since it was for Dad, I take that as disinterest and am probably abandoning that one).
4 - Reunion
5 - Cursed Artefacts For Sale
6 - Two other original short stories

Is that everything? I've lost track.

Those of you who have commented in my journal (brodie and the stats) I'm not ignoring you! I'm just bloody, fucking busy.

I'm being very good and doing my homework this weekend, though still not on top of the pile. This weekend -

1 - one novel
2 - one paper on One Hundred Years of Solitude; another paper on Heart of Darkness (the latter is late)
3 - two literary critiques (one on Dr. Seuss, another on Chekov)
4 - one write-up of my end-of-term art project
5 - polish two poems

Haven't done interimminister for a few days. Love Percy, but have to get caught up on RL. I've asked sparrohawk if we can postpone our little run-in to another weekend.

It's an interesting question, and the short answer is that I find Skyehawke is the elitist's forum. Not much responsibility for feedback there. I haven't posted any stories there in a long time.

Only in that the people who read there tend to be the people that post there, and the people that post there tend to be the creme de la creme - or at least we think so, once we're invited. The creme de la creme don't need reviews, or need to leave them either.

Or maybe the readers are just lazy.

For my part, not many people read my stuff there, so I drop a story now and then, but don't bother with it much.

Ye Gods, I'm having the worst time with the One Hundred Years of Solitude. I did a great job on my mid-term, and feel like I've already said what I wanted -- and now I have to write a paper.

On incest? I already tackled the larger issues, maybe zero in on something smaller. Say, the profane and the holy in 100 years....

I read that novel a few years ago at the Request of my Colombian husband. He's quiet proud that Colombia can produce A meaningful author.
Marquez is difficult to read I agree. I truly believe that certain aspects of language, expressions and National thought is lost in translation. (I'm not fluent enough in Spanish to read it in Spanish.)
What I mean is, for example my husband may tell me a joke from colombia. 80% of the time I don't understand the punchline. He always has to explain it to me (I'm not that dim-witted.) The thought processes are different compared to what as an American, is raised with. My husband too has the same problem understanding American jokes. I usually have to explain them (He still laughs.) Our expressions, and theirs are diffrent with different meanings.
Another example in music, Remember the Macheraina? In English it comes off as a sexy flirty song. In Spanish it is a political statement, a girl and her solider going off to war. Shaquira (is that spelled right?) Is much loved in Colombia and South America. Here she'll be a on album wonder. The song translated so badly, they made no sense. In Spanish they are cohesive, and actually nice.
So in a novel in this length must be difficult to translate. You must translate the words, but they may not have the same meanings to us as it does to to the Hispanic world. Does the translator try to clear up the sentence (for example) for us to understand what the author is trying to say? Or do they leave it in original form, and we miss an important idea?
So, I hope I relayed the difficulty is the cultural difference in thought to you. Not that it will help your reading and writing a report. Your not alone.

Thank you! I haven't had much time to write since I've been going to school and working part-time, but Snape Manor's been a little stuck since Order of the Phoenix came out. A lot characterisation changes as well as other aspects that sort of stole my thunder.

It's my understanding actually that Marquez' english is fluent, and he actually wrote the novel in both english and spanish, so it's not really a translation at least not through a third party. But you're right, humour is the most difficult thing to carry across from one culture to another. My Tibetan friends tell this jokes that just leave me sitting... well. So. You think that's funny. *squint*

Concerning Marquez and different expressions and thoughts.
Two weeks ago we heard Prince Charles was going to have a scandal about a what? butler?, servingman?, Secretary?, can't remember exactly. Was caught "squeezing a tube of tooth paste for the prince."
O.k. as an American I ask Does that mean servicing the prince in the hand-sort of a way.(I would like to add here UUUGGHHH...) Or does it really mean the Prince is so spoiled he can't actually do it himself.
It turns out it was some sexual situation caught on audio tape, But The British are too coy to say "receiving a hand job."
We speak the same languages by our but, the code of understanding is different.
You have the same trouble with Marquez. The words don't necessarily have the same meanings.
Have an extra piece of cake for me. I love cake!

Actually, I looked (by necessity, since I'm attempting to forumulate intelligible thoughts here) at my copy of One Hundred Years of Solitude - it is translated. My apologies. I asked if we were going to be reading translations when the term began, and I was told no, so I took that to apply to all the books we were reading.
