Chocolate Pudding and Percy

I'm a cooking fiend this week. I've made soup stock from scratch, spagetti sauce from scratch, my own pizza dough, and - you guessed it - sauce and thus pizza from scratch. An ultra-hot thai dish two nights ago.

Did you know mayonaise is just egg yolk, oil and a little mustard, lemon and vinegar? And a hell of a lot of stirring. Shit, I stirred through two episodes of That 70's Show, Enterprise, and Law and Order before I was finally done.

But now I know how to make mayonaise.

Tonight: I'm making chocolate mousse, from a half-remembered recipe. Hey, I had the egg whites left over from Mayo, right?

I have an idea for a Harry/Percy story. Of all things.

Ooh, Harry/Percy sounds promising.

I love that feeling of accomplishment in making something that most people have never made, like mayo. It's like you've discovered some long-lost secret.

Purrrrrr.... Percy *schlurp!*

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-06-13 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really tempted with Percy now, though he and Harry are a strange match.

It's almost like an archeological dig, finding these recipes for things you never knew quite how they were made... and when it works, it's - hey, wow. I spend $4 for a jar of this at the store, and it cost me 30 cents in ingredients. Really, whenever I have to keep a budget, I stop eating out and I start cooking.

Mayo -
store $4.00
mine $0.30

Bread -
store $3.49
mine $0.75 (two loaves)

Soup stock -
store $2.50 per can.
mine $0.25 and a bunch of stuff I was going to toss, for 3 quarts.

It adds up. And I feel so.. self-sufficient. *grins*

Ooh, I am a big fan of the homemade soup stock too. We save our veggie clippings in the freezer and then make up a big old batch ever now and then, and freeze *it* in containers. So easy. Now it feels like a crime to pay for it.

Bonus points if the Harry/Percy situation involves mayonnaise!

*runs away, giggling*

Let's vote...

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-06-13 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
One vote for Mayo. One vote for chocolate pudding.

Okay, how 'bout both? With Mayo in the first line.

Chocalate Pudding on Percy...I mean...

[identity profile] dphearson.livejournal.com 2003-06-12 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Blender Mayonaisse:
1 egg
2-3 tablespoon fresh lemon or good aged vinegar
2 tablespoons good mustard
1 cup excellent olive oil
Salt and Pepper

Put the first 3 in a blender and let rip. Add a spoon or two of oil at a time to the mixture; when it start to thicken , add the lot slowly until you have a lovely yellow sauce.
It should take no more than 5 minutes.

You forgot a step:

1 - buy blender.

Yep. That's right. I don't own one.

Oooo. I can see Percy covered in chocolate pudding. I mean, he's so clean it would be fun to get him messy. Heh-heh-heh. Oh, you guys are putting evil thoughts into my mind...

*grins devilishly*

Ummm. Pudding on Percy...Snape and Percy and pudding....yumm....

I'm kind of a 'third world' cook. I acutally started learning because I was going to Nepal and when I was in India I was a little helpless without those modern conveniences. You don't buy mustard in yellow bottles over there. You buy seeds, then crush them with a pestle, then mix in...

You get the idea.

Hey, loving this summer NW weather, eh? This when it's great to live out here! Great deals on Seattle rents - free months rent, heat included, pet policies so liberal I wouldn't be surprised to see a sign 'Large dangerous carnivores welcome.'

Indeed- my mother is from panama, so she taught me how to use a whisk, a mortal and pestle and how to combine spices. But, being an immigrant also makes you love all the modern conviences- like blenders and food processors, mandolines and microwave ovens.
Of course my favorite kitchen applainces are my knifes and cutting board!
Isn't it lovely? I went to a matinee of JC,S and had sushi outside. Just perfectly blissful. IOn moving: i am still keeping an eye on Fremont and environs. It will depend on auditions in August- i am doing them in Portland and Seattle, so we shall see. Because I will be doing a show in July, I won't be up there- but perhaps August we should get together for an iced coffee?(If you are not on holiday inCanada or something)

Yeah, that'd be great. Sorry, I thought I responded to this, but, well, it was in the middle of all that temp crap.

Yep, mayo's just an egg-based emulsion. You can make a pretty good egg-free version if you replace the egg yolk with soft tofu. (Yeah, yeah, I know. :P I'm allergic to the eggs, okay?) A food processor is the easiest way I know to make it - just drizzle the oil in slowly once you've added the acid and the seasonings. Mmm... chemistry...

If you screw up the chocolate mousse, there's always angel food cake! Mmm... cake...

Magical concoctions

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-06-13 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
You guys and your fancy machines. I use a wire whisk for everything. I don't even own a toaster. Or a microwave. For a long time I held out on the TV, though I still resist buying a cell phone.

There are all these things that seem to be made 'magically' that you've never seen your mom do. I made marshmallows in high school - get this, they're sugar (surprise, surprise), corn-syrup... and gelatin!

The mousse came out so-so. Good enough for me to eat in front of late night TV, not good enough to risk the boyfriend's inevitably unfiltered opinions (it's what I love about him - almost helplessly honest).

Ummm.. chocolate.

Re: Magical concoctions

[identity profile] wikdsushi.livejournal.com 2003-06-13 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I actually do envy, you. I just don't have the physical stamina to do everything by hand (although I still want a proper mortar and pestle).

Yeah, marshmallows are dead easy. Divinity, on the other hand, is a pain in the butt. My grandma used to make that by hand and it would come out perhaps one time in ten. She was *good*, too, could make anything. It's just the balance between beating at a steady rate for just long enough (too long *urgh*), having the room temperature and humidity set properly, avoiding distractions... it's the hardest thing I know of to make.

Mmm... want carob now...

Re: Magical concoctions

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-06-15 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
How're your eyes?

Divinity looked like so much fun in those old 1950's cookbooks, but then, they had pictures of women cooking in pearl necklaces, too, so that tells the story.

I was going to be going to Nepal, so I started learning how to cook from scratch with a minimum of equipment. But then, the nephew of the previous king killed his entire family (not that anyone can prove it) and his dad took over the country. So, I was a little worried going over there just after the bloodbath.

synchronicity

[identity profile] tinderblast.livejournal.com 2003-06-13 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Funny, I was just thinking about Percy, as I was finding rare (and medium rare) slash stories to rec, and there are some great Percy/insert male object of desire stories out there. And your great Snape/Percy one is one of my absolute favourites: I didn't rec it, but you know that I love it boundlessly and will rec it when I do a huge round up of all your work.

I'd love to see Percy's canon bossiness and pomposity (and being a stickler for the rules) be used in a story, *and* for him to be a top ... that would be hilarious.

Here's a really good Ron-centric story that I thought you might like: ‘Screwed’ by Slytherlynx. Damn you all, you might convert me to liking Ron yet.

I've read 'Screwed'! And liked it. And reviewed it (con-crit, I wanted her to present a case how Harry and Ron would fall out of sync in the first place). I'm not convinced, but I liked her story anyway. Gah. I can still see that scene with the stuff leaking out of Ron. It's both hot and gross.

I started writing the Percy story, and it shook my Muse loose. Hooray! I discovered that I've been spending too much time on the fandom, and not enough time with pencil in hand, writing. I just didn't realize it, because I used to have unlimited time (i.e., was out of work).

shake that muse

[identity profile] tinderblast.livejournal.com 2003-06-16 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I can see your point, but I liked the ambiguity of the story. I thought that Ron in canon was often a little clueless about emotions and motivations, so that didn't bother me. People drift apart.

But I thought that in the story something had happened to harry, anyway, something that he couldn't talk about on a literal or personal level, and that was fine, too.

More Percy stories! More officious Weasley bossiness and pompous asides! More boy-in-hornrims goodness!

Ack!

I have an idea for a Harry/Percy story. Of all things.

*covers eyes*

Well...if anyone could make me love that pairing it would be you. However I'd be lying if I didn't say I was still hopeing for more Harry/Snape. *begs pretty*

Re: Ack!

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-06-15 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*grins* You'll like it, really. Here's my Snape/Percy to prove it: Sweet Hypocrisy (http://inkstain.slashcity.net/isf/archive/7/sweethypocrisy.html).

As for Harry/Snape... well, I've signed up for the next wave of the SSFF. You can say that's pretty much in the bag. And I'm working on Snape Manor. Reading 'Call of the Wild' was very helpful.

Harry/Percy - intriguing!

Chocolate mousse recipe? Please?

Chocolate Mousse

[identity profile] icarusancalion.livejournal.com 2003-06-15 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd give you the recipe... if it had come out. But, although it was a wonderful, gooey, sticky, chocolate mess I devoured in front of Deep Space Nine episodes, it was certainly not chocolate mousse.

*giggles*

Re: Chocolate Mousse

[identity profile] salixbabylon.livejournal.com 2003-06-15 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I'll give you my favorite recipe:

1 2/3 Cups semi-sweet (or bittersweet) chocolate chips/pieces
3 Tablespoons butter
5 eggs, separated
3 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoons vanilla
1 Cup heavy whipping cream

In a double boiler, melt the chocolate and butter until smooth. Whip the egg yolks and half the sugar until doubled in volume. Separately whip the egg whites and the other half of the sugar, until stiff. Separately whip the cream and vanilla into medium peaks.

Fold the chocolate into the egg yolks. Fold that into the egg whites. Fold that into the whipped cream

Chill for 30 minutes at least.

Slather over the nearest of-age hottie and pull down the window shades. *g*

*schlup!* Yum! And I've got all the ingredients here, except the whipping cream.

Ooo. Chocolate Mousse and OotP, anyone?
