Now this is my idea of a good review.

I really enjoyed reading this and would suggest it to all harry/snape shippers XD

My suggestions to the author -
~ a little more Snape development in earlier chapters so the reader can follow his progressive 'obsession' over Harry
~ the ending was perhaps a little overly dramatic, but I feel that a bit more snape development would allow the reader to sympathise with all angles of the situation and could even bring the reader to tears.

So in other words suggestion 2 wouldnt exist if it werent for suggestion 1.

Though dont take this as an insulting review. It really was a great story and very well written. Im just nit-picky. lol

This is the sort of review that's honest, positive, yet gives constructive feeback that I can really use. I hadn't considered that Snape's viewpoint hadn't been developed early enough, although I remember my beta had mentioned something along these lines. In 2003, I'd opted to stick with my structure of a strict Harry viewpoint up until the start of their relationship, at which point I alternated between Snape and Harry's POV. But you know, the reviewer has a point.

Three years later I'm not likely to edit it, and this was my second HP fanfic. There are a lot of things I'd change. But it's something to learn from. *nods*

See, now, that's a piece of feedback that, while it might not make everyone happy (being told your wee fic child isn't perfect is always a bittersweet moment) is darned kind and useful. May all such criticism for me come couched so nicely, too.

It's much easier to take on a popular story that you know has done well that you wrote three years ago, of course. That umbilical cord has been severed and you can look at it as "a story" now.

That's the problem I have. I always mean to give something constructive but I chicken out. I'm trying to do it more but a few bad reactions make me leary. I mean if they didn't want anything constructive and have "yay! YOU DID GREAT!" only then they should mention that damnit.

I always think it's so cool when people take the time to give useful crit. I know that I only want to do it on stories that I really like, so I hope that it means the same thing when people do it for me.

Same here. If the story was fun, but flawed, I don't take the time either.

You know what I've noticed? The people who take the time to give useful concrit are almost always new to a fandom or an archive. I checked and sure enough, this was only her fourth post on Fiction Alley.

I think LJ limits my feedback, at least the concrit kind. I don't want to say something and have the writers fans come after me saying "see I don't feel that way" or "do you think you could do better"? Thus I leave the "loved it" kind and move on. If I do want to give concrit I will send an email. Sadly with LJ I often don't bother because then I have to go digging up the email. I'm a lazy slob and if it takes more than 2 steps I might no do it.

That's very true, and when I receive this kind of feedback in LJ I'm a little more uncomfortable because it's in public. I wonder if people will think less of the story after reading the review, so I'm more defensive.

In LJ, if I give concrit, I post and delete with the explanation that I don't concrit in public. Then I count on LJ notifications to send it along.

I've never thought of doing that, posting and deleting on purpose. Hummmm.
